Eddy “The Cannibal” Merckx, perhaps not only the best cyclist of all time but best endurance athlete of all time, once famously said, “Don’t buy upgrades. Ride up grades.” Helpful life advice. Buying a fancy new bike won’t win races, riding a lot and riding hard, will.

The essence of Merckx' advice pursues outside of cycling. It’s easy to get caught up with “gear,” the stuff we purchase to fill perceived gaps in our lives. It’s harder to put in the work.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love gear. I have a lot of hobbies & interests like: becoming a better parent, gravel cycling, wood working, mountaineering, remodeling, etc… They’re all very gear intensive. But, in recent years I’ve learned to appreciate knowledge and determination over a purchase when possible and gear that lasts and remains viable over time when it isn’t.
